Oude Molen Distillery: Woescester Street Elgin, Grabouw

Visit Oude Molen Distillery for an insightful Tour of the distillery and see the three largest Copper Pot Stills in the Southern hemisphere of Africa.
The tour starts off with a 15 minute audio visual relating the interesting story about the" Farther of South Afican Brandy ", Rene Santhagens and is narrated by the South African award winning actor, Marius Wyers. In this story we learn about the man, Rene, and how he started the Oude Molen brand at the foothills of the Pappagaai Mountains in Stellenbosch.
After an informative walk through the distillery you are then led into the maturation cellar where you will watch a second audio visual with surround sound and other dramatic effects.
The tour lasts for about 45 minutes and thereafter you will taste Oude Molens award winning Brandies.
The VOV - 14 Year old has won Gold and "Best in it's Class" at the Wine and Spirits Competition in London and the 100 Reserve (or 8 Year Old) has won Silver and "Best in it's Class".
The tour costs R40.00 per person and you get to take the tasting glass as a souvenier

The Ladies 2010 Lighthouse to Lighthouse walk for Hospice.

This has been taking place over the past four years and once again the walk has come around, as on 18 March 50 ladies, from all walks of life, and ages ranging from mid twenties to eighty, will set out from the Cape Agulhas lighthouse and “walk” 90km along some of the Overberg’s most beautiful and deserted coast line to the Danger Point lighthouse.

A route of contrasts it reminds us that this is life- full of contrasts and challenges. Along the rocky shoreline- where the remains of shipwrecks remind us just how wild and treacherous this coast can be and yet there are tranquil waters of blues and greens. They lap the shore and provide inviting cooling pools, a respite from the heat.

Coastal paths leave rocky shores winding through pristine aromatic fynbos, interspersed with splashes of scarlet heads of the candelabra and Haemanthus flowers. Mountains form a backdrop which guards the coast where the waves crash against the rocky coastline or run across smooth white beaches and the hinterland where you will discover salt pans, sheep farms and isolated communities .

An interesting area which is depicted in many a writers’ novel- people have left their history as evident by the graves and simple homesteads. High white sand dunes form a coastal barrier between the long stretches of white sands occupied by seals, darting cormorants, strutting sandpipers and pairs of oyster catchers and the great mighty ocean of the South Atlantic, where great creatures of the deep the whales are sighted- and sometimes carcasses are left as evidence.

The sea breezes are cooling and inviting against the clear blue skies and hot blistering sun- yet on a different day this same coast could be fierce, aggressive cold and uninviting. Easy walking paths give way to pebble banks testing balance and determination, and long hot tar roads lead through small settlements and coastal towns.

The ever elusive Danger point lighthouse finally appears on the horizon, so near causing hope and new found energy, the final destination is close at hand- yet it disappears and becomes like a mirage hovering, beckoning and just always out of reach. As the long last climb approaches suddenly it stands tall and unmoving, while tired but singing walkers, help each other walk under the final gate - Danger Point Lighthouse.

Walking with others may help us understand what others face in life – we arrive knowing a little but leave knowing more, not knowing what can be achieved but achieving more than expected and facing challenges and helping others reach their goal.

This four day walk has raised a fair amount to assist in putting the Hermanus Hospice on the map. This wonderful organisation helps people who are terminally ill to die with dignity and give support to their families.

The walkers raise money by getting sponsorships in the form of donations from people like you - so in fact they are walking for us all. In our little area from Kleinmond to Rooiels we have some of those very walkers.
Perhaps you can also walk with them by making a donation and support their quest. If so, make contact with Mary Bossenger at 0282729996. Businesses can pledge as well and use it as a means of advertising. Enquire how this can be done.
